Why has the English Faculty been targetted for the Net-ICT PILOT?
In 2005 we learnt a number of things about ITC competencies within the secondary school.
In the 2005 Trail Computing Skills Test our Form 10 students only achieved just N% above the state average for the test.
Our students performed worst in Word Processing - just 0.N% above the state average.
Yet NN% of our teachers claim basic competency in Word Processing.
Responsibility for Integrating the CORE ITC literacies across the curriculum lies with the English Faculty.
Will we all have to become Word Processsing Experts?
No. In fact you might not even have to become any more expert in Word Processing than you are now.
What will the Net-ICT PILOT be about?
We want to do a couple of thing or three.
Introduce you to Understanding Computers .... For First Timers. This is a CORE ITC SKILLS Module for STUDENTS. The teacher's role is faciliation and learning managment. Students bwill be expected to complete CORE ITC Skills tutorials and tests as HOMEWORK. This package is used by every school in the United Kingdom.
Introduce you to a Wiki - a collaborative development environment that let's you create and publish web pages to guide student activity in seconds.
Collaboratively develop some ITC Knowledge-based learning activities - your focus will be on English Literacy. You will have support for the ITC skills.
At this stage, consideration is being given to developing a Mulitmedia learning activity for English Stage 5. The matter is open. Your suggestions would be most welcome.
How much time will this all take?
Not exactly sure yet. The PILOT is planned to run over 4-5 weeks in Term 2. Initial training is planned for Week 2. We plan to provide relief from 'face-to-face' teaching for the initial training and some collaborative sessions throughout the PILOT.
This is a web-based environment, accessible from anywhere.
What do I need to do?
If you are interested in participating in the PILOT. Let your Coordinator or the Project Manager. We only need two or three teachers.
Then start thinking about a unit of work you would like to develop.
